Websites go dark as AI exposes critical security flaws

Two critical flaws in PHP programming language affect 70% of the world's websites, prompting a global rush to patch.

The flaws, discovered by AI models, allow attackers to take over web servers without needing a password, and were described as among the most severe vulnerabilities discovered in PHP.

The discovery came amid a surge in software security disclosures driven by increasingly powerful AI models, with the number of vulnerabilities found in 2026 on track to roughly double last year’s record total.

PHP programmers released a fix on Wednesday, and the PHP Foundation urged users to update immediately, calling it the most serious problem PHP had faced in more than a decade.
