Unauthorized Access to Danish CPR Registry Exposes 8.8 Million Citizens' Data

A professor of cybersecurity warns that personal data from the Danish CPR registry can be used for targeted phishing attacks.

The unauthorized access to the Danish CPR registry has exposed personal data of 8.8 million citizens, including names, addresses, and CPR numbers. This information can be used to create targeted phishing attacks that appear more legitimate. According to Jens Myrup Pedersen, a professor of cybersecurity at Aarhus University, the more data available, the more convincing the attacks can be. He notes that the exposed data is not sufficient to, for example, take out a loan in someone else’s name. However, it can be used for other forms of identity theft.
