UCT Secures $1.6 Million Google Grant for AI-Driven Medicine Research
The University of Cape Town will use the funding to develop an AI platform for improving medicine selection and dosing for African patients.
The project will investigate how genetic differences affect the way people process medicines, generating evidence to support safer treatment decisions for populations underrepresented in pharmacogenomics research.
The selected organisations will share a total of $36 million in funding, with UCT receiving $1.6 million to develop the AfriPGx-AI platform.
The platform will combine AI predictions with laboratory results and mathematical modelling to inform medicine selection and dosing, with decision-support tools designed for low-bandwidth environments.
