Twitch Streamer Builds Data Center in Minecraft to Protest Real-Life Data Centers

A Twitch streamer is building a massive data center in Minecraft as part of a protest against real-life data centers.

The streamer, Veni, is participating in Craft Attack 14, a Minecraft project where over 100 Twitch streamers build and play on a shared server. Veni’s project is a large data center built in the middle of a natural landscape, mirroring the impact of real-life data centers on the environment. The project is part of a broader protest against the use of artificial intelligence in data centers.

Veni’s protest is not limited to Minecraft, as he is also involved in the initiative ‘Rechenzentren, nein danke!’ (Data Centers, no thanks!) which aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of data centers. The initiative has already led to a police and fire department response in Vienna, where a group of activists climbed onto the roof of a data center conference and hung a banner.

The use of artificial intelligence in data centers is a growing trend, with many streamers and developers using tools like Vibecoding to create applications and visualizations. However, Veni’s protest highlights the potential negative consequences of this trend on the environment and society.
