Tech Giants Promise Single Button for Media Content Protection
OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic commit to a common instruction to block AI robots from scraping media content.
The tech giants have agreed to implement a single instruction that allows media companies to block AI robots from scraping their articles. This instruction will be recognized and respected by all participating companies. The solution aims to simplify the process of protecting content from AI robots, which currently requires different blocking methods for each robot.
Microsoft will implement the instruction from February 1, 2027, while Google will do so in 2027. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has mentioned implementing it in the coming months. Anthropic has already started implementing the instruction, according to Kevin Kelley, the technical standards manager at the company.
The announcement comes as media companies face a surge in AI robots scraping their articles to train AI models. Some companies, like The New York Times, have taken legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft for allegedly using their articles without permission or payment to train ChatGPT.
