Spain Relaxes Energy Requirements for Data Centers

Spanish government eases rules for data centers to use renewable energy, citing concerns over rising consumer electricity costs.

The Spanish government has relaxed the requirements for data centers to use renewable energy, gradually increasing the proportion to 80% by 2022, down from 80% immediately. The new rules also allow for a 36-month lifespan for renewable energy plants, up from 16 months, and exempt solar power plants from the requirements. The government aims to prioritize projects with a high likelihood of being built and prevent companies from hoarding capacity rights on the existing grid.

Spain has become one of the largest data center markets in Europe, driven by low energy costs, with global companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Blackstone investing in the sector. However, the government is concerned that the growth of data centers could lead to higher electricity costs for consumers, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticizing the industry for prioritizing profits over economic value.

The revised regulations are seen as a compromise between the government’s concerns and the industry’s demands, which had previously opposed the original proposal to require 60% renewable energy usage during peak hours by 2022.
