SpaceX Considers Manufacturing Its Own Fiber Optic Equipment
SpaceX may start producing its own fiber optic equipment for Starlink and its future data centers.
SpaceX is currently studying the possibility of manufacturing its own fiber optic equipment, a move that would follow the company’s strategy of integrating its own components for its space-related activities. This would include its Starlink satellite internet service and data center operations. The company has already developed its own engines and components for its Falcon and Starship rockets.
SpaceX’s decision to produce its own fiber optic equipment is likely driven by concerns over supply chain security and geopolitical tensions. The company currently sources its fiber optic equipment from three suppliers, including Corning and two Chinese companies, Hengtong and YOFC. However, the use of Chinese equipment in data centers is subject to restrictions by the US government due to security concerns.
SpaceX’s plans for its data centers are ambitious, with a goal of reaching 20 GW of capacity by 2028. The company also plans to launch a data center called ‘Star Mine’ in 2027 and a lunar data center in 2028, which will be assembled using Tesla’s Optimus robots.
