Researchers Find New Vulnerabilities in Connected Cars

A study by Swedish researchers found that connected cars are vulnerable to hacking, with 413 reported security issues between 2022 and 2024.

The study, published in the Software Quality Journal, analyzed 413 reported security issues in car-related software between 2022 and 2024. The researchers found that the number of vulnerabilities in apps, websites, and cloud services has tripled compared to a decade ago, when most issues were in the car’s own systems. The vulnerabilities include sensitive data such as the driver’s location and driving habits, which a hacker could access.

The researchers warn that the car’s infotainment system is also vulnerable, and anyone connected to the car’s Wi-Fi network could potentially access the car’s other systems. In a test, security researchers were able to take control of a Jeep Cherokee’s steering, gas, and brakes through the car’s media system.
