Relying on AI for Thought Tasks Can Affect Critical Thinking
Over-reliance on AI for tasks requiring analysis and decision-making can lead to cognitive atrophy, warns an academic.
Martha Castellanos, a national academic vice-rector, warns about the risks of delegating too many tasks to AI, leading to a phenomenon she calls ‘cognitive replacement’.
This can happen when people stop doing tasks that require understanding information and making decisions, and instead rely on AI to do the thinking for them.
Castellanos notes that this is similar to how people used to memorize phone numbers before the widespread use of mobile phones, and now rely on devices to store that information.
