Openserve Deploys AI to Predict Undersea Cable and Network Faults
Openserve uses AI and fibre sensing technology to detect potential fibre faults before they disrupt connectivity.
The company is introducing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into its Network Operations Centre (NOC) to help detect potential fibre faults before they disrupt connectivity. Openserve’s NOC monitors connectivity across the company’s terrestrial fibre network, submarine cable infrastructure, and satellite services. The centre uses fibre sensing technology to distinguish between normal activity and vibrations that could indicate potential damage.
The AI system can flag suspected interference, allowing Openserve to investigate and take preventative action. The company has sufficient technical resources, supplemented by subcontractors when additional support is required, to carry out installations, network assurance, and repairs. Openserve categorises faults according to severity, allowing teams to prioritise incidents that pose the greatest risk to connectivity.
The resilience of Openserve’s arrangement depends on alternative routes remaining available and having sufficient capacity to carry diverted traffic. The company has upgraded its national transport network following a major outage, demonstrating the importance of redundancy and sufficient capacity.
