OpenAI Claims to Have Solved 90-Year-Old Math Problem with AI
The company's agents solved one of the most challenging math problems in just 88 hours, but experts warn of the consequences.
Amerikan company OpenAI claims to have solved one of the most challenging math problems in just 88 hours using its AI model. The problem, known as the Navier-Stokes equations, has been unsolved for 90 years and is considered one of the seven ‘millennium problems’ by the Clay Mathematics Institute. The institute offers a one-million-dollar prize for the solution to each problem, but OpenAI has stated that it will not claim the prize.
However, many experts are warning of the consequences of relying on AI to solve complex problems. Hugo Duminil-Copin, a mathematician and winner of the Fields Medal, has expressed his concerns, stating that the use of AI to solve math problems is a ‘serious mismatch’ between the goals of technological companies and the nature of mathematics.
The experts are worried that AI-generated solutions lack human understanding and may lead to a loss of deep understanding in mathematics. They also point out that the use of AI to solve complex problems may lead to a lack of creativity and innovation in mathematics.
