Nikon Revokes First Prize from Scientific Video Over AI Use
Company withdraws award after discovering video was manipulated with generative AI, violating contest rules.
The Japanese company Nikon has revoked the first prize from its Small World in Motion photography contest after confirming that the winning video was manipulated with AI, which is explicitly prohibited by the contest rules.
The video, submitted by researcher Ning Xu, showed structures resembling hairs covering the respiratory tract of a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia, a rare respiratory disease.
Nikon announced the decision on October 9 through an official statement on its website, stating that the video did not comply with the contest rules regarding generative AI.
