New Data Center BRU01 in Neder-over-Heembeek Consumes Up to 3% of Brussels' Electricity Demand
The new data center, BRU01, will consume approximately 140 GWh of electricity annually, corresponding to about 3% of the current electricity demand in Brussels.
The data center BRU01, located in Neder-over-Heembeek, will have a power supply of 20 MW for its first phase, which is expected to be operational soon. Elia, the network manager, will then release an additional 20 MW for the second phase, scheduled to start in 2028. This will enable the data center to reach an annual electricity consumption of 140 GWh, equivalent to about 3% of the current electricity demand in Brussels.
The data center’s design is considered efficient, with relatively low electricity loss in cooling and other installations. However, the total pressure on resources remains significant, according to Lotte Stoops, a Green party member of parliament.
Stoops has expressed concern that Brussels lacks a strategy to evaluate such projects, which could have a substantial impact on the city’s energy consumption.
