Mitsui Fudosan Builds First Underground Data Center in Kobe

Mitsui Fudosan is developing its first underground data center in Kobe, Japan, to meet growing demand for AI image processing.

The data center will be built in an existing underground tunnel and will have a maximum capacity of 20 megawatts. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. The underground location offers advantages such as a stable temperature, high seismic resistance, and excellent physical security, making it suitable for deploying stable and secure data centers.

To reduce environmental impact and accelerate commercialization, the data center will use a closed-loop system to reuse underground water for cooling. Getworks’ modular shelter-type data center technology will also be integrated into the facility to enhance its resilience to natural disasters and external risks.

This project not only utilizes abandoned tunnels but also serves as a model for developing data centers in unused underground spaces, such as tunnels and abandoned mines, across Japan. Mitsui Fudosan plans to promote this model nationwide.
