Microsoft Plans to Double Data Center Capacity, 1450 Billion Dollar Investment

Microsoft plans to expand its data center capacity by over two times, with a potential additional investment on top of its 1450 billion dollar compute spend.

The move is expected to help the company alleviate its compute shortage issues, which led to Microsoft having to reject some AI and cloud service business, including losing a major customer Temu.

Due to capacity shortages, Microsoft has limited new cloud service subscriptions at key data centers in the US and Europe, with some customers switching to competitors.

Microsoft plans to expand its data center capacity, with its global network expected to exceed 38 gigawatts by 2032, surpassing the current 12 gigawatts and exceeding New York state’s peak electricity demand.
