Meta removes 3.7 million accounts in West Africa scam crackdown

Meta and law enforcement agencies have purged millions of accounts linked to organized cybercrime networks in West Africa.

The operation targeted romance fraud, pig-butchering investment schemes, financial sextortion, impersonation, and fraudulent scam recovery services.

Ghanaian authorities raided suspected scam compounds, arresting 19 individuals and seizing 303 electronic devices, while Nigerian law enforcement apprehended nine suspects and seized dozens of laptops and mobile devices.

The crackdown underscores a growing shift in organized cybercrime, with West African scam operations scaling into industrialized networks utilizing compound-based setups and forced labor tactics.
