Massive Cyberattack on Refrigerators: Supermarkets or Software Vendors to Blame?
A massive cyberattack has affected nearly 400 establishments, with three software programs from two prominent cold storage management groups being targeted.
The attack, which occurred on October 12, targeted nearly 300 supermarkets in France, with the country being the most affected due to a simple mistake. Over half of the addresses of the management interface were available on the web, making it easy for hackers to access the systems. The servers, known as Dixell XWEB or Danfoss AK-SM, were quickly connected to the internet to allow remote control of the installations, but were left with little protection.
The vulnerabilities in the software were known since 2023 and were documented again last summer, but were not addressed by the companies. The experts in cybersecurity blame the lack of security culture in the industry, where companies do not recall faulty systems and do not provide free maintenance.
The companies involved, Danfoss and Dixell, are now working with their insurers to address the issue, but the incident highlights the need for better security measures in the industry.
