Israeli Ad Agency Accused of Spying on Internet Users
Two IT research groups claim Discover-Tech used online ads to hack and spy on individuals.
The Israeli ad agency Discover-Tech has been accused of using online ads to spy on internet users, according to two IT research groups. The agency allegedly used its ads to track and hack the devices of selected individuals. This could be done by simply visiting a website or using an app, according to Reuters.
The Canadian group Citizen Lab, affiliated with the University of Toronto, claims that Discover-Tech’s ads have reached over 120,000 websites and 75,000 apps. The group also believes that the ads have been shown to individuals from NATO, the UN, and the EU Commission.
Discover-Tech has allegedly given Israeli surveillance companies, including Candiru, access to ad platforms run by companies like Google. Candiru is on the US list of companies subject to export restrictions, and has allegedly provided surveillance software used to target government officials, journalists, activists, and academics.
