Israel to Regulate Data Centers' Electricity Consumption

Israel's Electricity Authority to set rules for data centers' connection to the national grid, with a 200 MW capacity limit and a 20% electricity consumption cap by 2030.

The Israel Electricity Authority is expected to set the regulatory framework for data centers’ connection to the national grid today, with a 200 MW capacity limit and a 20% electricity consumption cap by 2030. A data center with a 200 MW capacity would consume four times more electricity than a large factory, but would require only 5,000 square meters of land, compared to 1,600 square meters for the servers and the rest for cooling systems and backup power systems.

The construction of a data center begins with land identification, which should be close to power transmission lines and natural gas pipelines, to facilitate the installation of gas turbines in the future. The process involves a preliminary request to the system manager, Noga, for advance approval, followed by statutory planning, and then the submission of detailed plans, which Noga can approve or reject.
