India's AI Future Can Be Switched Off from Washington

India's AI future is at risk of being controlled by foreign powers, whether the US or China.

Dhruv Atreja, head of AI research at Fastino Labs, notes that India’s AI future can be switched off from Washington, as seen with the shutdown of Anthropic’s AI models in June.

China’s offer to establish a Brics AI open-source community is also a concern, as Chinese models are capable and free to adapt, but may come with Beijing’s sensitivities built in.

The Indian government is responding by chasing size, with start-ups and state-backed companies planning to build large AI models, and a new frontier AI fund being explored with a potential anchor investment of up to 200 billion rupees.
