Google's Data Center Sparks Outrage in Finland Over Illegal Tree Felling
Google's massive data center project in Finland has sparked outrage and a petition after the company was found to have illegally cut down 250,000 trees.
The project, which is Google’s largest investment in Europe, has been criticized for its environmental impact, with concerns over the company’s plans to reserve 50% of the production from the Loviisa nuclear power plant for 22 years.
The Finnish agency responsible for environmental supervision, LVV, has ordered the suspension of the project, citing a violation of environmental regulations.
The project’s opponents are skeptical of Google’s promise to replant 130 hectares of trees, and are calling for a redevance indexed on environmental damages and resource consumption.
