Finland Investigates Tree Felling for Google Data Center

Finnish police investigate possible environmental law violations related to tree felling for Google's planned data center in Muhos.

Finnish police have launched a criminal investigation into possible environmental law violations related to the felling of trees for Google’s planned data center in Muhos. The investigation focuses on the actions of Tuike Finland Oy, a subsidiary of Google. According to preliminary information, there were ambiguities and shortcomings in the drainage and water management on the construction site. The police will determine the circumstances of these issues as part of the investigation.

The authorities claim that Tuike Finland cleared and drained 330 hectares of forest on the future site in Muhos before completing the required environmental impact assessment. The land was already cleared, and excavators were cleaning the area next to large power lines.

Earlier this month, Finnish authorities ordered Google to halt work in Muhos and Otanmäki, located about 100 kilometers south-east, after the company failed to complete the environmental impact assessment before clearing the forest. The regulatory body overseeing environmental permits and assessments demanded a halt to preparatory activities that alter the environment.
