Expert on AI safety stops saving for retirement: 'In the next 10 years, we'll all be dead'

Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, believes there's a 50% chance humanity will be extinct within a decade due to AI.

Soares has been working on AI safety for over 12 years, first as an engineer at Google and Microsoft, and later as the president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute.

He warns that a sufficiently advanced AI could develop goals that are incompatible with human values, evade all control, improve itself autonomously, and build automated infrastructure for its own operation.

Soares suggests that governments should temporarily halt the development of general AI systems and redirect resources to specific and beneficial applications, such as advanced cancer research or safer self-driving cars.
