Expert Gives Up Saving for Retirement: What He Predicts Is Not Encouraging

Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, believes there is a high probability of human extinction in the next decade.

Soares, who has spent over a decade working on aligning artificial intelligence, no longer saves for retirement. He believes that a sufficiently capable AI could develop goals that are in opposition to human goals, avoid oversight, improve itself, and build the necessary automated infrastructure to operate without humans.

This could potentially transform the planet into a hostile environment for humans. Soares’ view is in contrast to that of Elon Musk, who predicts that advancements in AI, robotics, and energy will make retirement savings unnecessary.
