EU's Cyber Resilience Act Makes Cybersecurity Mandatory for Digital Products

The EU's Cyber Resilience Act requires manufacturers to ensure the security of digital products, including software and hardware, with strict deadlines.

The EU’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) has introduced mandatory cybersecurity requirements for digital products, including software and hardware, with a phased implementation schedule. The regulation applies to nearly all products with digital elements sold in the EU, including connected devices, apps, and enterprise software. Manufacturers must ensure the security of their products, including secure development, vulnerability management, and provision of necessary security updates.

The CRA requires manufacturers to report security incidents and vulnerabilities within 24 hours, with stricter requirements for critical products. The regulation also introduces principles such as Security by Design and Security by Default, which require security considerations to be integrated into the development process from the outset. This approach aims to prevent costly post-launch fixes and improve transparency throughout the supply chain.
