EU's Cloud and AI Plan Meets Resistance Over Vendor Requirements, Costs, and Transition Time

Critics argue that the plan's vendor requirements, costs, and transition time are too stringent and may lead to higher prices and lower quality.

Tollverket, the Swedish customs agency, has expressed concerns that the 12-month transition period for cloud migrations may be too short, especially for critical infrastructure. The agency wants to allow longer transition periods in exceptional cases and clearer rules for existing contracts.

Post- and Telecommunications Authority, PTS, warns that widespread migrations may be necessary if current vendors are not recognized under the new framework, leading to significant costs and disruptions for public services.

Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner, SKR, supports the plan but highlights the risk of high transition costs and emphasizes the need for national guidance and support for smaller municipalities with outsourced IT operations.
