Critical PHP Vulnerabilities Expose Websites to Hackers

Two critical security flaws in PHP programming language put millions of websites at risk of takeover and data access.

The vulnerabilities, discovered in a widely used programming language, pose a significant security risk to websites worldwide. According to Jens Myrup Pedersen, a professor of cybersecurity at Aarhus University, the flaws allow hackers to gain control over websites and access sensitive data. PHP is a fundamental building block of the internet, used in popular systems like WordPress and numerous webshops, intranet, customer portals, and booking systems.

The developers behind PHP identified the two critical security flaws and released an update on Wednesday to patch the vulnerabilities. However, Pedersen notes that the disclosure of the vulnerability has created a ‘cat-and-mouse game’ between cybersecurity experts and malicious hackers.

In response to the vulnerability, governments, authorities, and public institutions in several countries have temporarily shut down their websites as a precautionary measure, until they can apply the necessary updates and ensure their systems are secure.
