Companies Must Go Beyond Compliance to Protect Valuable IP
Compliance audits confirm cybersecurity controls are in place, but technical testing proves they work.
Compliance audits confirm that companies have documented their cybersecurity controls, but technical testing proves that those controls work when someone attempts to breach their defenses. Bad actors don’t care about compliance status and will try to exploit weaknesses in digital defenses. Meeting contractual requirements for cybersecurity measures establishes a bare minimum security baseline rather than comprehensive asset protection.
The process of configuration drift can mean that IP is no longer properly protected, and hackers use autonomous scanning tools to continually search for openings caused by configuration drift and network misconfigurations.
An effective IP strategy is only as viable as the technical controls keeping that information secure, and companies must identify and categorize key assets to be protected using trade secrets, patents, or copyrights.
