China-linked hackers target Fiji and Pacific region
US embassy warns of hacking attempts on governments and telecommunication networks in the Pacific Islands.
The US embassy in Fiji has reported that hackers with links to China compromised a regional organisation in the Pacific nation, warning that governments and telecommunication networks in the region are also being targeted.
Fiji is emerging as a major telecommunications hub in the Pacific Islands, with Google expanding a network of subsea cables connecting the US military outpost of Guam, US defence ally Australia, French Polynesia and the mainland United States, via Fiji’s capital Suva.
The US embassy has previously urged Fiji to boost cybersecurity to guard against data risks from China, and the FBI has taken action to combat China-sponsored hackers targeting critical infrastructure in the United States.
