Artificial Intelligence May Boost Asian Economies, but Also Widen Regional Disparities

Developed Asian economies may adopt AI faster, but developing economies may lag behind by one to two decades.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) study, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Economic Convergence in Asia,” analyzed how differences in capital, skills, productivity, and digital infrastructure could affect a country’s ability to adopt AI.

The study found that AI could increase the average annual growth rate by 0.5 to 1 percentage point in developed Asian economies, and by 0.2 to 0.8 percentage points in economies in development and developing countries, depending on the pace of technological progress.

Developed economies like Singapore and South Korea are better positioned to adopt AI quickly due to their developed digital infrastructure, skilled workforce, and access to capital.
