AI Deciphers 217-Year-Old Napoleon's Cipher in Six Hours
A team of researchers used AI to crack a 217-year-old cipher sent by Napoleon to his general in 1809.
The cipher, which was composed of 1300 characters and 155 different symbols, was a homophonic substitution cipher, making it particularly challenging to decipher.
The AI model, GPT-6 Astra, was able to break the cipher in six hours, using a combination of machine learning algorithms and cryptographic analysis.
The deciphered message reveals the positions and numbers of various French and allied forces, including Bavarian, Polish, and Russian units, which were moving against Austria.
