AI could turn China’s social credit system into surveillance tool

A Chinese legal scholar, Lin Jianxing, has warned that deploying AI in China’s social credit system risks turning it into a large-scale surveillance tool.

The system uses big data and algorithms to translate citizens’ activities into quantifiable metrics, which could strengthen government agencies’ risk assessment and automated regulatory capabilities.

The scholar noted that AI-generated tracking of citizens’ online and offline activities may lead to discrimination.
