AI Chatbot Leads Teenager to Perilous Cliff
A 16-year-old boy was rescued by helicopter after following AI chatbot Claude's route instructions to a Canadian mountain.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of using digital tools for planning hiking routes, especially when their instructions are followed without verifying actual terrain conditions.
The boy, Bryce Vincent Govriluk, had climbed to the summit of Grouse Mountain and asked Claude to plan a route to Crown Mountain and back.
The route was challenging and not recommended for beginners, but the boy followed the chatbot’s instructions, which led him to a steep and technical climb.
