16-Year-Old Rescued by Helicopter After AI Chatbot Sends Him on Hazardous Hike
A 16-year-old boy was rescued by helicopter after following the instructions of an AI chatbot, which led him to a treacherous and impassable terrain.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of using digital tools for planning hiking routes, especially when following their instructions without verifying the actual conditions on the ground. The boy, who had some experience with indoor climbing, followed the chatbot’s instructions to plan a route from Grouse Mountain to Crown Mountain and back. However, the chatbot’s route led him to a steep ascent of over 520 meters, known as Widow’s Arete, which requires specialized equipment and technical knowledge. The boy realized the terrain was too hazardous and called for help, leading to a rescue operation by the North Shore Rescue team.
