Agency RS for Environment uses AI for Natural Phenomena Forecasting
Agency RS for Environment uses AI to enhance forecasting of natural phenomena that could threaten safety and property.
The Agency RS for Environment uses AI as a tool to quickly detect natural phenomena that could threaten safety and property. This is done by combining knowledge, research, measurements, models, and human work. AI does not replace traditional forecasting models, but connects them with measurements, data, and machine learning methods. This allows for some processes to be accelerated, more data to be processed, and individual forecasts to be improved.
The representative of the Ministry of Environment and Space, Monika Zajc, emphasizes that for each forecast, there is knowledge, research, measurements, models, and human work involved. She also highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity and the connection between meteorologists, hydrologists, oceanographers, mathematicians, computer scientists, and others in developing new solutions.
The Agency RS for Environment is working on several projects, including a regional weather forecasting model for Slovenia, which has shown a noticeable improvement in forecasts. AI is also used for short-term forecasting of storms, solar radiation, and solar power production. A significant part of the development is focused on water and the sea, with models such as SIREN and HIDRA4.
